New arrivals at Chulmleigh

New born lambs for the farm

Our lambing season is over, and has once again been very successful thanks to a Charollais ram, lent to us by Ed Lowe, our visiting lecturer from Bicton College . We have 8 Poll Dorset ewes and 6 became pregnant.

Lambing began on 20th January with a healthy female lamb and we thought the births would spread out over 4 weeks or so, but that was not the case. On January 25th we had another female lamb born, closely followed on the same day by male twins from a different ewe, then a single female from a third ewe .  The twins were originally triplets but the third lamb was very small and did not survive.  The remaining 2 ewes gave birth on the 1st and 3rd February, providing another 3 lambs.

Although one or two have needed a little extra feeding they have all grown well and are happily running around outside putting on weight.

Many thanks to Mick Kemp our farm manager and Ali Garritty who visited and checked on the lambs regularly and made sure all went smoothly.
